Boho Rustic & Romantic Cosy Autumn Wedding

Our first trip together was to Crail in the East Neuk of Fife back in 2014. It felt perfect that Ally proposed at that same place one evening in February 2019. It was very romantic – he’d set up fairy lights, candles, a fire pit, music and fizz at the bottom of the garden by the coast. He’d even set up a camera to film the moment so we can watch it back whenever we want or share the memory with our daughter one day when she is older.

Ultimately, we wanted our wedding to be fun – a big celebration without too much of the formal stuff! We were keen that it would represent us as a couple so we opted for a DIY-style wedding as that meant we could really make it our own. We knew we wanted to get married in the East Neuk of Fife as that had special meaning to us throughout our relationship.

Although it was hard work – choosing each of our suppliers meant we could create a day that felt personal to us and gave us a real sense of achievement to see it all come together. We put a lot of thought into the little details and really hoped these things helped make the day stand out a little for our guests. After postponing the wedding for an extra year thanks to COVID-19, we were just thrilled to bring everyone together for a good ol’ party!

After trying some dresses on in various bridal studios, I had a good idea of what I was looking for, but just hadn’t found the one! Somehow, my mum stumbled across a dress on the website stillwhite.com which seemed to be just what I was looking for, so I took a risk and bought it. When it arrived, I was relieved it was even more beautiful in person than it looked in the photos. I also really liked the idea of re-wearing a dress as it seemed like a more eco-conscious option.

With the dress being quite unique, I opted to have a bespoke veil made to match it perfectly. This was created by Megan and her team at Nutmeg Couture who also made some alterations to the dress. I adored both my dress and veil and especially liked the fact that they were that little bit more unique. Alister chose his kilt from MacGregor and MacDuff. He opted for the ‘Arran Mist’ tartan and his best men, ushers and dad all wore this tartan on the day also.

There was no particular reason for choosing this, other than the fact he really liked the look of it! It also felt like a perfect choice as my family have holidayed on the Isle of Arran for over 50 years, so it is a place close to our heart.

We had a Humanist ceremony and our celebrant was Marnie Roadburg. We wanted to share our story through the ceremony but didn’t want it to feel too formal so it had plenty of humour throughout which also helped calm our nerves on the day! I was walked down the aisle by my Gran and Mum which was an incredibly special moment. I was so anxious about this part …but it ended up being one of my highlights of the day!

Our 6-month-old daughter was sat with Alister’s mum in the front row throughout which was so lovely too. After waiting an extra 400 days for our wedding (thanks to COVID) we were just thrilled to finally be able to tie the knot… literally! Ally is big on his music so he spent a lot of time ahead of the wedding creating various playlists for throughout the day. The mission was to set the right tone for our guests to relax and enjoy themselves.

He tried to incorporate a variety of musical genres so that there was something for everyone, not always easy with such a wide spread of ages on our guest list. When asked, he would describe the music as soulful, a bit eclectic and ultimately full of the party vibes!

I spent a lot of time researching photographers before getting in touch with Martin Venherm. We met him for a coffee and both got on with him so well! This was so important as neither of us feel very comfortable having our photo taken so we were keen to find someone who made us feel at ease. Our wedding photos are incredible – we love them and feel so glad we chose Martin to be there with us on the day.

Our videographer was Dave at Amarone Wedding Films. He was so easy to communicate with in the lead-up to the wedding and very fun to be around on the day. Our video is brilliant and he was happy to accommodate our request for some guest testimonials at a small extra cost which was a lovely added extra.

So, I was a bit obsessed with the styling element of the day and put a lot of work into trying to create the vision. The theme I was going for was boho rustic with lots of Autumnal colours… and some beachy vibes too (being on the East Coast, we had to incorporate the seaside into things a little!). Elaine from Fifty Six Events was amazing! She totally got my vision and ran with it.

Her props and styling skills, combined with things I had gathered myself, were perfect. It all just came together the afternoon before the wedding and it was so exciting to see after I had spent so long imagining it in my mind. Jill created beautiful Autumnal floristry full of burnt orange, peach, blush pink, creamy white and greenery. The warm colours helped everything feel cosy on a not-so-cosy October day!

One of our favourite features was our candle fireplaces which Ronnie from All Wrapped Up helped create. We had heaps of candles gathered together beside seating areas to create comfy cosy nooks for our guests to chill out. Who doesn’t love a candle…or several?! Our cake was unreal and masterfully baked by my sister’s best friend Sarah as a gift to us.

A lot of the other styling elements were homemade by us too – confetti cones with dried petals, our story through photographs stuck onto a pallet, table plan, table names and signage, as well as an order of service stencilled onto a pallet. We also made our favours in the form of seaside cottages made from wood and then painted white with colourful front doors.

The combination of COVID-19 restrictions and having a 6-month-old baby meant that any honeymoon plans had to be put on hold for a bit. We managed to get away for a long weekend mini-moon to Croatia in June (8 months after the wedding) which was so lovely. We have plans to go on a longer trip next year, but will probably have our little person with us for that, so it’ll be more of a family holiday than a honeymoon!

Everyone always says this, but try and enjoy as much of the planning process as you can. The day is over in a flash, so make the lead-up to it all count by having fun with it all. Don’t listen too much to what other people think – it’s your day, so make it however you want it to be and that way, it’ll be perfect for you and your partner.
